Technology in the classroom
The principle goal of education is to create men and women who are capable
of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done.
-Jean Piaget
I believe it is important to incorporate technology into the classroom, across disciplines, as it allows students to develop communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills. It also allows for ample collaboration and activity-based, discovery learning.
Oftentimes, teachers seem uneasy about using technology, but I believe that it brings another dimension into the class, where students are learning in a different way, all the while discovering how to use different forms of technology that will be useful for their futures. I have discovered that using ICT’s of various forms captivates my students attention, is very hands-on, is a great visual tool, and allows students to move around, work collaboratively and oftentimes they “became a window to the world” (QEP, professional competency #8). By incorporating ICT’s into the classroom, students are given the opportunity to think outside the box regarding ways of communicating and it additionally allows for strong engagement in concepts that otherwise feel very dry. Students should be taught in various ways by using a range of tools and strategies to best fit the needs of all students, in an attempt to expand each of their information and communication horizons.
