Unit: Exploring Emotions Through Art
Cycle 3, Grades 5-6
By: Ashley Rosenhek
Overall Unit Rational: Throughout this unit, students will work individually, as part of a team, and actively participate in class-wide discussions. Students will be given the opportunity to explore their emotions through the use of traditional and non- traditional materials and tools, such as paint, icing, pastels, crayons, brushes, sponges, toothbrushes, Popsicle sticks, as well as other various tools. Throughout this unit, students will gain a new appreciation for the use of color, lines, shapes, and textures used in their artwork and will additionally learn about new concepts such as primary, secondary and tertiary colors, and various lines and shapes, all of which can assist them in evoking varying emotions. The culmination of all of the tasks and activities within this unit will allow students to explore their personal identity such as, their likes, dislikes, their perceptions and feelings and will additionally provide them with the tools to work collaboratively with others in a respectful yet critical way. Students will also gain skills and vocabulary that they will be able to use in their future art classes, as well as in other parts of their lives, in order to better express themselves. Students will also learn to appreciate artwork of various artists as well as those of their peers and develop an understanding that art is a means of expression and has the ability to evoke varying emotions. Moreover, a big idea that will be conveyed to the students throughout this unit is that everyone has varying opinions, experiences and knowledge that will allow them to perceive art in ways that vary from one another. The idea that everyone is unique and that no view or opinion is right or wrong will be strongly embedded in the lessons. The main purpose for the development of this emotion-based unit is to allow for student engagement, motivation, exploration, creativity and imagination. It is my opinion that the exploration of traditional and non-traditional tools
and materials, using a non-traditional painting surface for the final project, and implementing a range of unique activities will allow for just this. Utilizing music, icing, famous artwork as inspiration for personal work as well as creating emotion-filled nametags and a class mural, among other things, will engage and motivate students and allow them to get excited about art and think outside the box!
